Individual counselling is a confidential conversation between a counsellor and a student, aimed at alleviating difficulties the student experiences in their emotional, cognitive, behavioural and/or social functioning.
In psychological counselling, through conversation, the counsellor and student work together to understand the student’s feelings and experiences, and to identify tools and steps that may help the student in the future.
The counsellor’s goal is to help the student gain insight into their feelings, behaviour and self-perception, to enable better self-understanding, and to provide tools to make it easier to deal with everyday difficulties.
In individual counselling, the student is encouraged to define their own goals and the outcomes they wish to achieve during meetings with the counsellor. Common goals students set include increasing motivation for learning, better organising time for completing assignments, improving communication with friends, parents or a partner, and coping more easily with unpleasant emotions such as grief over the death of a loved one, a breakup or parental divorce, and fear of exam situations.
Individual counselling takes place at UCC at the Faculty of Civil Engineering. Counsellors are psychologists with additional training in psychotherapy and counselling.
Generally, you will be invited to the first session within 1–2 weeks of your application. If further counselling is needed, a starting date will be agreed with the counsellor. During periods of high demand (October, November, March, April), the waiting time may increase to several months. Psychological Counselling aims to offer shorter sessions to include as many students in need as possible.
